Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Raise and Level Your Tucson

- Place 2-ton minimum jack stands beneath the approved support points, then raise the rear if necessary so the vehicle sits level.
- Confirm stability before going underneath. Keep the wheel chocks installed.
- Measure sill height to confirm the vehicle is level.
Step 2: Remove the Lower Splash Shield
- Use a 10mm socket, extension, and ratchet to remove the lower-engine-cover bolts.

Step 3: Identify and Loosen the Fill Plug
- Locate the fill plug on the transmission case. Do not confuse it with an engine, transfer-case, or differential plug.
- Position the drain pan beneath the transmission in case a small amount escapes.
- Use a 17mm socket, extension, and ratchet to loosen the fill plug approximately one turn.
- Leave the plug installed until the transmission has been drained.
- Never drain fluid before confirming fill-plug access.
Step 4: Drain the Old Fluid
- Position the 8-quart graduated drain pan directly beneath the transmission drain plug.
- Use a 24mm socket and ratchet to remove the drain plug carefully.
- Allow the fluid to drain until it slows to an occasional drip.

Step 5: Measure the Drained Fluid

Step 6: Reinstall the Drain Plug
- Remove the old sealing washer and install a new transmission drain-plug sealing washer.
- Thread the drain plug into the case by hand to prevent cross-threading.
- Use the 24mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the drain plug to 35-45 Nm (26-33 ft-lbs).
- Use brake-parts cleaner and lint-free shop towels to clean the area so later leaks are easy to identify.
Step 7: Add the Initial Fluid Quantity
- Use the 17mm socket and ratchet to remove the loosened fill plug.
- Insert the ATF fluid-transfer pump hose securely into the fill opening.
- Use the ATF fluid-transfer pump to add Hyundai-approved ATF SP-IV.
- Initially add the same quantity that was measured during draining. Do not add the transmission’s total dry capacity.
- Install a new fill-plug sealing washer, thread the plug in by hand, and use the 17mm socket and torque wrench to tighten it to 30-35 Nm (22-26 ft-lbs).
Step 8: Connect the Temperature Scan Tool
- Connect the OBD-II scan tool to the diagnostic connector beneath the driver-side dashboard.
- Use the scan tool controls to select the automatic-transmission data list and display Transmission Fluid Temperature.
- An OBD-II scan tool is a handheld diagnostic device that reads live information from the vehicle’s computers.
- Do not substitute an infrared thermometer because transmission-case temperature is not the same as internal fluid temperature.
Step 9: Circulate the New Fluid
- Start the engine and keep your Tucson level with the parking brake firmly applied.
- Hold the brake pedal and move the selector slowly through Reverse, Neutral, Drive, and the manual ranges.
- Pause in each position for three seconds, then return the selector to Park.
- Repeat the sequence twice while monitoring transmission-fluid temperature with the OBD-II scan tool.

Step 10: Set the Fluid Level

- If no fluid exits, reinstall the level plug loosely, switch off the engine, and use the 17mm socket to remove the fill plug.
- Use the ATF fluid-transfer pump to add ATF SP-IV in 0.25-quart increments. Reinstall the fill plug before restarting the engine.
- Restart the engine, repeat the selector sequence, verify 50-60°C (122-140°F), and check the level again.
- Do not remove the fill plug while the engine is running.
Step 11: Tighten the Level Plug
- Once fluid exits as a slow drip, switch off the engine.
- Install a new transmission level-plug sealing washer and thread the plug in by hand.
- Use the 24mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the level plug to 35-45 Nm (26-33 ft-lbs).
- Use brake-parts cleaner and lint-free shop towels to clean all three plug areas.
Step 12: Reinstall the Splash Shield
- Position the lower splash shield against its mounting points.
- Use the plastic trim-clip removal tool by hand to reinstall the reusable push clips.
