Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Raise and Level the Vehicle
- Use the 2-ton floor jack at the specified front and rear center lifting points.
- Place four 2-ton jack stands beneath the reinforced side lifting points.
- Use the digital level gauge on the lower door sill to make your Tucson level from side to side and front to rear.
- Gently push the vehicle to verify that it is stable before going underneath.
- A level vehicle is critical for accuracy.
Step 2: Remove the Lower Shield
- Use a 10mm socket, 12mm socket, 1/4-inch drive ratchet, and plastic trim-clip removal tool to remove the engine and transmission lower shield fasteners.
- Support the shield with one hand while removing its final fastener.
- Set the shield and fasteners aside in their installed order.
Step 3: Locate the Service Plugs
- Identify the fill plug on the upper or forward side of the transmission case, the drain plug at the bottom, and the level plug on the side of the transmission.
- Clean around all three plugs with brake cleaner and lint-free shop towels.
- Do not confuse an engine-oil plug or structural transmission bolt with a service plug.
Step 4: Loosen the Fill Plug First
- Position the graduated drain pan beneath the transmission as a precaution.
- Use the correctly fitting 24mm socket, 6-inch extension, and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to loosen the transmission fill plug.
- Remove the fill plug and inspect its threads and sealing washer.
- If the plug does not release normally, stop before draining the fluid.
- Never drain before confirming refill access.
Step 5: Drain the Old Fluid
- Position the 5-liter graduated drain pan directly beneath the transmission drain plug.
- Use a 24mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the drain plug carefully.
- Allow the fluid to drain until it slows to an occasional drip, usually 10-15 minutes.
- Inspect the fluid for a strong burned odor, metallic flakes, or clutch material. A small amount of dark paste on a magnetic plug is normal.
- Measure the drained quantity using the graduated drain pan or graduated measuring container.
Step 6: Install the Drain Plug
- Clean the drain plug with brake cleaner and a lint-free shop towel.
- Install a new drain-plug sealing washer with its flat surfaces seated squarely.
- Thread the drain plug in by hand to prevent cross-threading.
- Use a 24mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the drain plug to 39-49 Nm (29-36 ft-lbs).
Step 7: Add the Initial Fluid Quantity
- Insert the long-neck transmission funnel into the fill opening. If access is restricted, connect the fluid-transfer pump and hose to the fill opening.
- Add the same measured quantity of new Hyundai SP-IV fluid that was drained.
- Do not add the transmission’s total dry capacity. Fluid remains inside the torque converter and internal passages during a drain and refill.
- Install the fill plug finger-tight with a new sealing washer to prevent fluid loss during the initial circulation procedure.
Step 8: Circulate the New Fluid
- Confirm the parking brake is applied and keep the brake pedal firmly depressed.
- Start the engine and leave it idling. Do not raise engine speed.
- Move the selector slowly through Reverse, Neutral, Drive, and the manual ranges, pausing approximately three seconds in each position.
- Return the selector to Park and leave the engine running.
- Use the OBD-II scan tool to monitor transmission-fluid temperature.
Step 9: Set the Fluid Temperature
- Allow the transmission-fluid temperature displayed on the OBD-II scan tool to reach 50-60°C (122-140°F).
- Keep the engine idling, the selector in Park, and your Tucson level throughout the check.
- If the temperature rises above the specified range, reinstall the level plug and allow the transmission to cool before repeating the check.
Step 10: Check the Fluid Level
- Place the graduated drain pan under the level plug while the engine remains idling.
- Use a 17mm socket and 3/8-inch drive ratchet to remove the level plug carefully.
- The level is correct when fluid escapes as a thin, steady stream and then slows to a drip.
- If no fluid comes out, use the fluid-transfer pump and hose at the fill opening to add Hyundai SP-IV fluid in approximately 200 mL increments.
- Wait after each addition until fluid begins flowing from the level opening.
- If fluid pours out heavily, let the excess drain until only a thin stream or rapid drip remains.
- Check the level only within the temperature range.
Step 11: Install the Level and Fill Plugs
- Install a new sealing washer on the level plug and thread it into the transmission by hand.
- Use a 17mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the level plug to 34-44 Nm (25-32 ft-lbs).
- Switch the engine off after the level plug has been installed.
- Remove the fill plug using the 24mm socket if it was only finger-tight, and fit its new sealing washer.
- Thread the fill plug in by hand, then use the 24mm socket and torque wrench to tighten it to 34-44 Nm (25-32 ft-lbs).
- Clean all spilled fluid from the transmission case using brake cleaner and lint-free shop towels.
Step 12: Inspect for Leaks
- Start the engine and inspect the drain, fill, and level plugs while your Tucson remains securely supported.
- Use dry lint-free shop towels to confirm that no fresh fluid appears around the plugs.
- Switch the engine off immediately if leakage is found.
Step 13: Reinstall the Lower Shield
- Raise the lower shield into position by hand.
- Install all original clips and bolts using the plastic trim-clip removal tool, 10mm socket, 12mm socket, and 1/4-inch drive ratchet.
- Tighten the small shield bolts until snug. Do not overtighten them into the plastic retainers.
Step 14: Lower the Vehicle
- Use the 2-ton floor jack to raise each end slightly and remove the four jack stands.
- Lower your Tucson slowly onto level ground.
- Remove the rubber wheel chocks.
