🔧 Tucson - Headlight Bulb Replacement

Replacing both low-beam headlight bulbs on your Tucson is a beginner-friendly repair. The bulbs are accessed from the rear of each headlamp housing under the hood, so no bumper removal is normally needed.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 20-40 minutes

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Turn the headlights and ignition OFF before starting.
  • ⚠️ Let the bulbs cool for at least 10 minutes if the lights were recently on.
  • ⚠️ Do not touch the glass part of the new halogen bulb with bare fingers. Skin oil can shorten bulb life.
  • ⚠️ Wear nitrile gloves and safety glasses to protect your hands and eyes.
  • ⚠️ Battery disconnect is not required for this bulb replacement, but keep metal tools away from battery terminals.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • Nitrile gloves
  • Safety glasses
  • Clean microfiber cloth
  • Small flathead screwdriver
  • Flashlight

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Low-beam headlight bulbs - Replace in pairs - Qty: 2

📋 Before You Begin

  • 🚗 Park your Tucson on level ground and set the parking brake.
  • 💡 Turn the headlight switch to OFF.
  • 🧤 Put on nitrile gloves before handling the new bulbs.
  • 📦 Compare the new bulbs to the old bulbs before installing. The base shape and connector style must match.
  • 🧽 If you accidentally touch the bulb glass, wipe it clean with a clean microfiber cloth.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Open the hood

  • Use your hand to pull the hood release inside the cabin.
  • Use your hand to release the secondary hood latch at the front of the hood.
  • Raise the hood and secure it with the hood prop rod if equipped.
  • Use a flashlight to look behind each headlight housing.

Step 2: Locate the low-beam bulb cover

  • Use the flashlight to find the round dust cap on the back of the headlight housing.
  • The dust cap is a round cover that keeps moisture and dirt out of the headlamp.
  • The low-beam bulb is the bulb used for normal nighttime driving.
  • Work on one side at a time.

Step 3: Remove the dust cap

  • Use your hand to turn the round dust cap counterclockwise.
  • Pull the dust cap straight off once it unlocks.
  • If the cap is tight, use a clean microfiber cloth for better grip.
  • Do not pry hard on the plastic cap with the small flathead screwdriver unless absolutely necessary.

Step 4: Disconnect the bulb connector

  • Use your hand to press the release tab on the electrical connector.
  • The connector is the plastic plug attached to the back of the bulb.
  • Pull the connector straight back off the bulb.
  • If the tab is hard to press, use the small flathead screwdriver gently to help depress the locking tab.

Step 5: Remove the old bulb

  • Use your hand to turn the bulb base counterclockwise until it unlocks.
  • Pull the bulb straight out of the headlight housing.
  • Do not force it sideways. The bulb has alignment tabs that fit only one way.
  • No fastener torque is used for this step.

Step 6: Install the new bulb

  • Put on nitrile gloves before touching the new bulb.
  • Use your hand to hold the new bulb by the plastic base only.
  • Insert the new bulb into the headlight housing, matching the alignment tabs.
  • Turn the bulb clockwise until it locks in place.
  • Do not touch the glass part of the bulb.
  • Gentle pressure is enough.

Step 7: Reconnect the bulb connector

  • Use your hand to push the electrical connector onto the new bulb.
  • Listen or feel for the connector to click into place.
  • Lightly tug the connector by hand to make sure it is secure.

Step 8: Reinstall the dust cap

  • Use your hand to place the dust cap back onto the rear of the headlight housing.
  • Turn the dust cap clockwise until it locks.
  • Make sure the cap sits flat and fully sealed.
  • This seal is important because moisture inside the headlight can damage bulbs and wiring.

Step 9: Repeat on the other side

  • Use the same steps to replace the bulb on the opposite headlight.
  • Use the flashlight to help see the connector and dust cap clearly.
  • Replace both bulbs as a pair so brightness and color match side to side.

Step 10: Test the headlights

  • Use your hand to turn the headlight switch ON.
  • Check that both low-beam headlights illuminate.
  • Switch to high beams and back to low beams to confirm normal operation.
  • If one bulb does not work, turn the lights OFF and recheck the connector.

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Confirm both headlights are bright and even.
  • ✅ Check that both dust caps are fully locked in place.
  • ✅ At night, park facing a wall and verify both beams point evenly forward.
  • ✅ If the beam pattern looks much higher or lower on one side, the bulb may not be fully seated.
  • ✅ No scan tool or infotainment reset is required after this repair.
