📋 Before You Begin
- 🚗 Park your Tucson on level ground and shift the transmission into Park.
- 🧱 Place wheel chocks behind both rear tires. Wheel chocks are blocks that stop the vehicle from rolling.
- 🅿️ Set the parking brake before lifting the front of the vehicle.
- 🧴 Open the hood and locate the brake fluid reservoir. It is the small plastic tank near the driver-side rear of the engine bay.
- 👀 Check the brake fluid level. If it is at the MAX line, remove a small amount with a clean suction tool before compressing the caliper pistons.
- 📌 Your Tucson uses a normal hydraulic front brake caliper. No scan tool or electronic parking brake service mode is needed for the front brakes.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Loosen the Front Lug Nuts
- Use the 21mm lug nut socket and 1/2-inch breaker bar to loosen each front wheel lug nut about half a turn.
- Do this while the tires are still on the ground so the wheels do not spin.
- Do not remove the nuts yet.
Step 2: Lift and Support the Front of the Tucson
- Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum at the front center lifting point or approved front pinch weld area.
- Raise the front of your Tucson high enough for both front wheels to clear the ground.
- Place jack stands rated 3-ton minimum under the approved front support points.
- Gently lower the vehicle onto the jack stands using the floor jack.
- Give the vehicle a light shake by hand. It should feel stable before you continue.
Step 3: Remove the Front Wheels
- Use the 21mm lug nut socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the loosened lug nuts.
- Remove both front wheels and place them flat under the side of the vehicle as an extra safety backup.
Step 4: Inspect the Brake Assembly
- Put on safety glasses, nitrile gloves, and a dust mask.
- Look at the caliper, pads, rotor, and brake hose before taking anything apart.
- The caliper is the clamp-shaped part that squeezes the brake pads against the rotor.
- Spray dusty areas with brake cleaner spray and wipe with shop rags.
Step 5: Remove the Lower Caliper Bolt
- Use a 14mm socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the lower caliper slide bolt.
- If the slide pin spins, hold the pin with a 17mm box-end wrench while loosening the bolt with the 14mm socket.
- A slide pin is a smooth pin that lets the caliper move in and out evenly.
Step 6: Swing the Caliper Up
- Use the small pry bar 12-inch gently between the caliper and old pad if the caliper is tight.
- Swing the caliper upward away from the rotor.
- Support the caliper with the bungee cord 18-inch from the strut spring.
- Do not let the caliper hang by the rubber brake hose.
Step 7: Remove the Old Brake Pads and Hardware
- Pull the old inner and outer brake pads out by hand.
- Use the small pry bar 12-inch if the pads are stuck in the bracket.
- Remove the old metal pad clips from the caliper bracket by hand or with the small pry bar 12-inch.
- The pad clips are thin stainless pieces that help the pads slide quietly and evenly.
Step 8: Remove the Caliper Bracket
- Use the 17mm socket and 1/2-inch breaker bar to remove the two caliper bracket bolts.
- Remove the caliper bracket from the steering knuckle.
- Set the bracket on a clean surface.
Step 9: Remove the Front Rotor
- Use the Phillips #3 screwdriver to remove the rotor retaining screw if equipped.
- If the screw is stuck, use the impact screwdriver with Phillips #3 bit. An impact screwdriver twists when struck and helps loosen stuck screws.
- Pull the rotor straight off the hub.
- If the rotor is rusted on, tap the rotor hat area with the rubber mallet 16-ounce.
- Do not hit the wheel studs with the mallet.
Step 10: Clean the Hub Face
- Use the wire brush to clean rust and dirt from the wheel hub face.
- Spray the hub with brake cleaner spray and wipe it dry with shop rags.
- The hub face must be clean so the new rotor sits flat and does not cause brake vibration.
Step 11: Prepare and Install the New Rotor
- Spray both sides of the new rotor with brake cleaner spray.
- Wipe both sides dry with shop rags.
- Slide the new rotor onto the hub by hand.
- Install the rotor retaining screw with the Phillips #3 screwdriver if equipped.
- Torque to 4-6 Nm (35-53 in-lbs) if a retaining screw is installed.
Step 12: Service the Caliper Bracket
- Use the wire brush to clean the pad contact areas on the caliper bracket.
- Spray the bracket with brake cleaner spray and dry it with shop rags.
- Install the new front brake hardware kit clips by hand.
- Apply a thin film of brake caliper slide pin grease only where the pads touch the clips.
- Do not get grease on the rotor or pad friction surface.
Step 13: Check and Grease the Slide Pins
- Pull each slide pin out of the caliper bracket by hand.
- Wipe old grease off with shop rags.
- Inspect the rubber boots for tears.
- Apply fresh brake caliper slide pin grease to the pins.
- Push the slide pins back into the bracket by hand until they move smoothly.
Step 14: Reinstall the Caliper Bracket
- Place the caliper bracket over the new rotor.
- Start both bracket bolts by hand first to avoid cross-threading.
- Use the 17mm socket and torque wrench 10-150 ft-lbs to tighten the bracket bolts.
- Torque to 88-98 Nm (65-72 ft-lbs).
Step 15: Install the New Brake Pads
- Slide the new inner and outer brake pads into the caliper bracket by hand.
- Make sure the friction material faces the rotor.
- The pads should move slightly by hand. If they are jammed, remove them and recheck the clips and bracket cleaning.
- Pads should slide, not rattle.
Step 16: Compress the Caliper Piston
- Check the brake fluid reservoir under the hood before compressing the piston.
- Place one old brake pad against the caliper piston.
- Use the C-clamp 6-inch or brake caliper piston compression tool to slowly push the piston fully into the caliper.
- The piston is the round metal piece inside the caliper that pushes the brake pad.
- Compress slowly so brake fluid does not overflow from the reservoir.
Step 17: Reinstall the Caliper
- Remove the bungee cord 18-inch and swing the caliper down over the new pads.
- Start the lower caliper slide bolt by hand.
- Use the 14mm socket and torque wrench 10-150 ft-lbs to tighten the caliper slide bolt.
- If the slide pin spins, hold it with the 17mm box-end wrench.
- Torque to 22-32 Nm (16-24 ft-lbs).
Step 18: Repeat on the Other Front Side
- Repeat Steps 4 through 17 on the opposite front wheel.
- Always replace front pads and rotors in pairs so braking stays even.
Step 19: Reinstall the Wheels
- Install each wheel by hand.
- Thread all lug nuts by hand first.
- Use the 21mm lug nut socket and 3/8-inch ratchet to snug the lug nuts in a star pattern.
- A star pattern means tightening across the wheel, not around in a circle.
Step 20: Lower and Torque the Wheels
- Use the floor jack rated 3-ton minimum to lift the front slightly off the jack stands.
- Remove the jack stands rated 3-ton minimum.
- Lower your Tucson until the tires touch the ground.
- Use the 21mm lug nut socket and torque wrench 10-150 ft-lbs to tighten lug nuts in a star pattern.
- Torque to 88-108 Nm (65-80 ft-lbs).
Step 21: Pump the Brake Pedal
- Sit in the driver seat and press the brake pedal slowly several times.
- The pedal may go low at first. Keep pumping until it feels firm.
- This moves the caliper pistons back against the new brake pads.
- Do not drive until the pedal feels firm.
Step 22: Check Brake Fluid Level
- Open the hood and check the brake fluid reservoir.
- Add DOT 3 or DOT 4 brake fluid only if the level is below the MIN mark.
- Use shop rags to wipe any spills right away.
- Install the reservoir cap securely.
