- ⚠️ A compressed coil spring stores enough energy to cause severe injury. Use loaded strut assemblies rather than transferring the springs at home.
- ⚠️ Do not loosen the large center nut on top of the old strut. It retains the compressed spring.
- ⚠️ Support the steering knuckle before removing the strut bolts. Letting it hang can damage the brake hose, ABS wire, or CV axle.

📋 Before You Begin
- Park your Tucson on firm, level ground. Select Park, apply the parking brake, and switch off the ignition.
- Place wheel chocks securely behind both rear tires.
- Compare each new loaded strut with the corresponding old unit. The left and right assemblies may have different brake-hose and stabilizer-link bracket positions.
- Apply penetrating oil to the stabilizer-link nut and the two large strut-to-knuckle fasteners. Let it soak for several minutes.
- No infotainment setting, scan-tool command, or battery disconnect is required.
🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps in order:
Step 1: Loosen the Front Wheel Nuts
- Use the 21mm lug-nut socket and 1/2-inch breaker bar to loosen each front wheel nut about one-half turn. Do not remove them yet.
Step 2: Raise and Support the Front
- Wear safety glasses and mechanic’s gloves.
- Use the hydraulic floor jack beneath the front-center subframe lifting point to raise your Tucson.
- Position the jack stands beneath the reinforced side support points. Lower the vehicle gently and confirm it is stable.
- Leave the floor jack lightly touching the front-center lifting point as a secondary precaution.
Step 3: Remove the Front Wheels
- Use the 21mm lug-nut socket and 1/2-inch ratchet to remove the wheel nuts.
- Remove both front wheels and slide them away from the work area.
Step 4: Release the Hose and ABS-Wire Brackets
- Use the 12mm socket, 3-inch extension, and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the brake-hose bracket bolt from the strut.
- Use the trim-clip removal tool or needle-nose pliers to release the ABS wheel-speed sensor wire clips without pulling on the wire.
- Move the hose and wire safely aside without twisting them.
Step 5: Disconnect the Stabilizer Link
- Use the 17mm socket and ratchet to remove the stabilizer-link nut from its strut bracket.
- If the link stud spins, hold its center with the matching 5-8mm hex-bit socket while turning the nut with the 17mm combination wrench.
- Move the link stud out of the strut bracket. Do not force the link sideways.
Step 6: Mark and Support the Steering Knuckle
- Use the paint marker to outline the strut’s position against the steering knuckle. This helps preserve approximate alignment until the required professional alignment.
- Use the floor jack to support the lower control arm lightly. Do not lift the vehicle off the jack stand.
- Use the support wire to secure the steering knuckle to the body so it cannot fall outward.
Step 7: Remove the Strut-to-Knuckle Fasteners
- Use the 19mm or 22mm socket with the breaker bar and the matching combination wrench to loosen the two large strut-to-knuckle bolts. Fastener size can vary with replacement hardware.
- Remove both nuts and bolts using the 1/2-inch ratchet, socket, and matching wrench.
- Use the rubber mallet only on the bolt ends if they are stuck. Protect the threads if the bolts will be reused.
- Keep the knuckle supported. Do not stretch the brake hose, ABS wire, or inner CV joint.
Step 8: Remove the Upper Mount Nuts
- Open the hood and locate the three small upper strut-mount nuts at the suspension tower.
- Support the strut from below with one hand.
- Use the 14mm socket, 3-inch extension, and 3/8-inch ratchet to remove the three upper nuts.
- Do not loosen the large center nut.
- Lower the complete strut assembly carefully through the wheel opening.
Step 9: Prepare the New Loaded Strut
- Use the wire brush to clean the steering-knuckle mounting faces.
- Place the old and new assemblies side by side. Confirm that the upper studs and all hose, wire, and link brackets match.
- Do not use the ratchet or socket on the new strut’s center shaft nut. Loaded assemblies should arrive fully assembled.
- Match left and right brackets before installation.
Step 10: Install the New Strut at the Tower
- Guide the new strut into the wheel opening and place its upper studs through the strut tower.
- Install the three upper nuts by hand to prevent cross-threading.
- Use the 14mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the upper mount nuts evenly to 49 Nm (36 ft-lbs).
Step 11: Attach the Steering Knuckle
- Align the steering knuckle with the new strut bracket. Use the floor jack to adjust the lower control arm height if needed.
- Install both large bolts in their original direction, followed by new self-locking nuts.
- Use the correct 19mm or 22mm socket, matching combination wrench, and torque wrench to tighten both fasteners to 147 Nm (108 ft-lbs).
- Remove the support wire after confirming the knuckle is secure.
Step 12: Reconnect the Stabilizer Link
- Insert the stabilizer-link stud through the new strut bracket and install a new self-locking nut.
- Use the 17mm combination wrench and matching hex-bit socket if the stud spins.
- Use the 17mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the nut to 107 Nm (79 ft-lbs).
Step 13: Reinstall the Hose and ABS-Wire Brackets
- Position the brake hose without twists or sharp bends.
- Use the 12mm socket and torque wrench to tighten the brake-hose bracket bolt to 11 Nm (8 ft-lbs).
- Use the trim-clip removal tool or needle-nose pliers to seat the ABS-wire clips fully in their brackets.
- Turn the steering by hand and verify that neither the hose nor wire becomes tight.
Step 14: Replace the Strut on the Other Side
- Repeat Steps 4-13 on the opposite side using the same listed tools and torque specifications.
- Do not remove both struts simultaneously; finishing one side helps prevent unnecessary suspension movement.
Step 15: Reinstall the Wheels
- Install both wheels and thread all wheel nuts by hand.
- Use the 21mm lug-nut socket and 1/2-inch ratchet to snug the nuts in a crisscross pattern.
- Use the hydraulic floor jack to raise your Tucson slightly, remove the jack stands, and lower it until the tires touch the ground.
- Use the 21mm lug-nut socket and torque wrench to tighten the wheel nuts in a crisscross pattern to 98 Nm (72 ft-lbs).
Step 16: Settle and Inspect the Suspension
- Use your hands to press down firmly on each front corner several times.
- Use the safety glasses and a visual inspection to confirm that all upper nuts, knuckle bolts, brackets, and clips are secure.
- Verify that no tool or loose part remains beneath the hood or vehicle.

- Start your Tucson and turn the steering wheel slowly from lock to lock while stationary. Listen for binding, popping, or spring movement.
- Check that the ABS and stability-control warning lamps turn off normally.
- Take a slow test drive on a smooth road. Stop immediately if the steering pulls sharply or you hear knocking.
- Have a four-wheel alignment performed before normal driving. Strut removal changes front camber and toe.
- Recheck wheel-nut torque to 98 Nm (72 ft-lbs) after approximately 80-160 km.
