🔧 Outback - Side View Mirror Assembly Replacement

This procedure replaces the complete driver-side or passenger-side mirror assembly. The interior door panel must be loosened to reach the electrical connector, followed by removal of three mounting nuts.

Difficulty Level: Beginner | Estimated Time: 0.5-1 hour per side

Assumption: You are replacing the complete power mirror assembly, not only the mirror glass.

⚠️ Safety & Precautions

  • ⚠️ Wear safety glasses and gloves because the mirror glass may break.
  • 🔋 Disconnect the negative battery cable before unplugging the mirror wiring.
  • 🛑 Wait at least 60 seconds after disconnecting the battery before working inside the door.
  • 🚪 Support the mirror before removing its final mounting nut so it cannot fall against the door.
  • 🔌 Never pull an electrical connector apart by its wires.

🔧 Required Tools

You'll need the following tools for this repair:

  • 10mm socket
  • 1/4-inch drive ratchet
  • 1/4-inch drive torque wrench rated 2-20 Nm
  • Phillips No. 2 screwdriver
  • Plastic interior trim-removal tool set
  • Small flat-blade screwdriver
  • Painter’s masking tape, 25mm wide
  • Mechanic’s gloves
  • Safety glasses

🔩 Required Parts

HowToo sells all the parts you need for this repair:

  • Power side-view mirror assembly matching the original connector and features - Qty: 1 per side
  • Mirror mounting foam seal or gasket - Qty: 1 per side
  • Interior door-panel clips - Qty: As needed

Match the replacement to the side being repaired and to the original features. Your Outback may have heated mirrors if equipped with the All-Weather Package.

📋 Before You Begin

  • 📍 Park your Outback on level ground, apply the parking brake, and switch the ignition off.
  • 🪟 Lower the window completely. This gives you a safe place to hold the door while removing the panel.
  • 🧰 Place painter’s masking tape along the painted edge near the mirror.
  • 🔋 Open the hood. Use a 10mm socket and ratchet to disconnect the negative battery cable, then position it so it cannot touch the terminal.
  • 🔎 Compare the new and old mirror connectors, mounting studs, gasket, and options before removing the original mirror.

🔨 Step-by-Step Instructions

Follow these steps in order:

Step 1: Remove the Mirror Corner Trim

  • Use a plastic interior trim-removal tool to pry the triangular trim panel away from the upper front corner of the door.
  • Pull the panel straight inward to release its retaining clips.
  • Set the trim aside where its clips cannot be damaged.
  • Work slowly; cold plastic clips break easily.

Step 2: Remove the Door-Pull Screw Cover

  • Use a small flat-blade screwdriver to lift the small cover inside the door-pull handle.
  • Wrap the screwdriver tip with painter’s masking tape first to prevent scratches.
  • Use a Phillips No. 2 screwdriver to remove the exposed retaining screw.

Step 3: Remove the Interior Handle Screw

  • Use a small flat-blade screwdriver to open the trim cover behind the interior door-release handle.
  • Use a Phillips No. 2 screwdriver to remove the screw behind the cover.

Step 4: Release the Door Panel

  • Insert a plastic interior trim-removal tool between the lower edge of the door panel and the metal door.
  • Twist the tool gently beside each clip until the clip releases.
  • Continue around the bottom and both sides of the panel.
  • Lift the door panel straight upward to unhook it from the window ledge.
  • Support the panel rather than letting it hang from the wiring.

Step 5: Disconnect the Door-Panel Connections

  • Use your fingers to press the locking tabs and unplug the window-switch and courtesy-light connectors.
  • Use a plastic interior trim-removal tool to release the interior handle cable housings from their brackets.
  • Lift each cable end from its lever using your fingers.
  • A cable housing is the outer sleeve that holds the moving release cable in position.
  • Place the door panel on a clean, padded surface.

Step 6: Disconnect the Mirror Wiring

  • Peel the moisture barrier back only as far as needed, using a plastic interior trim-removal tool.
  • Locate the mirror electrical connector near the upper front corner of the door.
  • Press the connector lock with your fingers and unplug it.
  • Release the mirror wiring from its retaining clips using the plastic interior trim-removal tool.
  • Do not tear the moisture barrier or remove its reusable adhesive.

Step 7: Remove the Original Mirror

  • Hold the mirror firmly from outside the door with one hand.
  • Use a 10mm socket and 1/4-inch drive ratchet to remove the three mirror mounting nuts.
  • Keep the socket squarely on each nut so it does not fall inside the door.
  • Guide the wiring and connector through the door while lifting the mirror away.
  • Use a plastic interior trim-removal tool to remove any gasket material stuck to the door.

Step 8: Install the Replacement Mirror

  • Verify that the replacement foam seal or gasket sits flat against the mirror base.
  • Guide the electrical connector through the opening and place the mirror studs into the door.
  • Hold the mirror against the door while starting all three nuts by hand.
  • Use a 10mm socket and 1/4-inch drive torque wrench to tighten the nuts evenly in stages.
  • Torque the mirror mounting nuts to 7.5 Nm (5.5 ft-lbs).
  • Do not overtighten the nuts; excessive force can crack the mirror base.

Step 9: Reconnect and Route the Mirror Wiring

  • Push the mirror connector together by hand until its lock clicks.
  • Secure the wire in the original retainers using your fingers.
  • Confirm that the wiring cannot contact the window glass or regulator.
  • Press the moisture barrier back into its original adhesive using your fingers.

Step 10: Reinstall the Door Panel

  • Reconnect the interior handle cables by hand and lock their housings into the brackets.
  • Reconnect all electrical plugs by hand until their locking tabs click.
  • Hang the upper edge of the panel over the window ledge.
  • Align every door-panel clip, then press around the panel firmly with your palm.
  • Use a Phillips No. 2 screwdriver to reinstall the handle and door-pull screws until snug.
  • Press both screw covers into place by hand.

Step 11: Reinstall the Corner Trim

  • Align the triangular trim-panel clips with their openings.
  • Press the trim into place by hand until every clip is fully seated.
  • Check that the trim lies flat and does not pinch the mirror wiring.

Step 12: Reconnect the Battery

  • Place the negative battery terminal onto the battery post.
  • Use a 10mm socket, 1/4-inch drive torque wrench, and ratchet to tighten the terminal nut.
  • Torque the negative battery terminal nut to 6 Nm (53 in-lbs).

✅ After Repair

  • ✅ Switch the ignition on and operate the mirror through its full up, down, left, and right range.
  • 🔥 If equipped with heated mirrors, turn on the rear-window defogger and confirm that the mirror begins warming after several minutes.
  • 🪟 Run the window fully down and up. Listen for contact with the mirror wiring.
  • 🔒 Test the power lock, window switch, courtesy light, and interior release handle.
  • 💧 Confirm that the moisture barrier and door panel are fully sealed to prevent water leaks and wind noise.
  • ⚙️ If automatic window operation is lost, close the window completely and hold the switch in the upward position for approximately one second.

💰 DIY vs Shop Cost

Shop Cost: ₹12,000-₹30,000 per side, depending on mirror features and imported-part availability

DIY Cost: ₹6,000-₹20,000 per side for parts only

You Save: ₹3,000-₹10,000 by doing it yourself!

Labor rates and imported US-spec mirror prices vary around Panipat. This repair takes a shop approximately 0.5-1 hour per side.
